Touching Base

When you get a job, you start to hear the phrase “to touch base” a lot. It sounds good in context, but what does it really mean? Where did this phrase come from? Are we talking bases of a statue? Sliding into home plate? Are we running in between bases while we live life? Is THAT why we need to touch base so much?

You also realize that people start to use big phrases for easy concepts. Confuses the hell out of me. If you want a menu on a web site, say menu. Don’t say .NET Navigation User Control and mean “menu.” Jesus. Do we really need to impress people that badly? Do our egos need to be nursed to the point where the people who need to understand us can’t?

And do we need to blow our nose so hard?
