The Inevitable Thanks

When I receive e-mail from a co-worker, at the bottom there is almost always a trailing “thanks” that more often than not associates itself with no true emotion.

BILL Hello Peter. What’s happening? Um, I’m gonna need you go ahead and come in tomorrow. So if you could be here around nine, that would be great. (starts to walk away) Oh, oh, yea…I forgot. I’m gonna also need you to come in Sunday too. We, uh, lost some people this week and we need to sorta catch up. Thanks.

As it is in my role as an in-house designer, If I am done making a change to a web site, I don’t want to thank the other party for making me do work. It’s not logical. I even try to get away with not returning the “thanks” courtesy. If I don’t mean it, why should I say it? However, there is e-mail constantly coming in saying thanks this and thanks that. If I don’t say it, I will stand out from the crowd, and that is the last thing I want to do.

Can this monster be defeated?
