Big Apple Tuesday

All right, so Apple announced new Mac computers with Intel processors. I have to admit: this has what I’ve been waiting for. I knew the computers would be faster and wanted to wait for the Intel ones to get a Powerbook.

This whole MacBook thing has thrown me for a loop, though.

How can Apple quickly replace generations of their iPods without blinking an eye but has to create a new (and cringe-worthy) name of “MacBook” to describe a new generation of notebook offerings? Are they doing this because they are going to continue production of the PowerBook and MacBook lines in parallel? I get an innate feeling that I should wait at least six months before even considering buying one of these, even though I have been lusting after a fast OS X system for a while. Let’s see how the Mac Minis will be priced.

The answer is simple. It was called “Powerbook” because it used PowerPC arquitecture from IBM. Since they cut the deal and started to use Intel, they could not use the word “power” because of copyright issues. So they had to come with a new name and choosed the word “mac” to give a closer apreoach to the brand. Believe me, for what I saw, this is a huge step for the Apple notebooks.

It may be a name closer to the Apple brand, but the marketing department could have done better than that.
